Tamils across Virginia and all around the world - Our beloved Pongal Tamil festival is now officially recognized as “Pongal Day” by the Virginia General Assembly. The Virginia General Assembly is the oldest continuous legislative body in the New World. A resolution introduced by Delegate David Bulova (D-Fairfax) was approved by the General Assembly on February 14, 2017. With the passage of the resolution, the Commonwealth of Virginia has designated January 14 in 2018 and in each succeeding year as Pongal Day in Virginia.

In his testimony to the General Assembly, Delegate Bulova explained to his fellow members that Pongal Day is similar to Thanksgiving Day. He then described the importance of the celebration to millions of Tamils. Committee members in both the House and Senate were deeply moved and inspired by our Tamil Heritage and the resolution was approved unanimously.

We thank and congratulate Delegate Bulova, who represents the City of Fairfax and parts of Fairfax County in the House of Delegates, for his continued and unwavering support and promoting this auspicious festival before is fellow members to pass this resolution. This will provide Tamils across the Commonwealth of Virginia an opportunity to celebrate and share our rich Tamil heritage, culture, language, and history.

By proclaiming January 14th as Pongal Day, both Virginia and our great nation will have the opportunity to recognize the myriad contributions that Tamil Americans provide to this great nation's social, economic, political and cultural fabric. Pongal Day will be an opportunity to remember, celebrate and educate future generations about the inspirational role that Tamil Americans have played and continue to play in communities across America.

The Valluvan Tamil Academy and its legal advisor Mr. Sriskandarajah has worked tirelessly to make this happen.

Congratulations to VA Tamils, Valluvan Tamil Academy and Thanks to Delegate Bulova!

This is a historical moment for all Tamils in the United States. Now Pongal day is one of the official designated days that was enacted by the Virginia General Assembly.

It's a historical moment for all Tamils in Virginia. Thanks a million for your support. We are stronger when we are together.
